Due to a series of physical factors many sailboats seem to wander back and forth. When the wind rises and presses against the freeboard it puts great pressure on the front of the boat. The wind may also catch the forestay, the mast and perhaps the lazy jack. Shifting wind and falling and rising windpressure also play a roll.
Luckily this problem can be solved simply by hoisting an anchor riding sail. It works just like the feathers of an arrow or like the weather vane on the roof - always following the direction of the wind.
